My people, e be like say our prayers don answer for Abia State! Governor Alex Otti has just flagged off two major water projects worth N1.3 billion that will finally put an end to the dry tap syndrome wey don dey torment residents for years.
The Ubakala and Ariaria Water Schemes are not just fancy government projects – them be real solutions to the water wahala wey ordinary Nigerians dey face every blessed day. If you live for Abia or any part of Nigeria wey water supply na serious problem, you go understand wetin this development mean.
Make we talk am as e be. The Ubakala Water Scheme go specifically target communities around that axis, while the Ariaria project go focus on the bustling commercial areas where traders and residents don dey suffer water scarcity for too long. These are not small-small boreholes o – we dey talk about comprehensive water systems wey fit serve thousands of people.
Governor Otti make am clear say the projects na part of his administration's commitment to improve public utilities across the state. But abeg, make we look beyond the political talk and see wetin this mean for ordinary citizens wey don dey carry jerrycans upandan just to get clean water.
Oya, make we yarn the bitter truth. Nigeria get serious water problem wey affect millions of people every day. According to UNICEF, about 60 million Nigerians no get access to clean water, while another 150 million no get proper sanitation. This na tragedy for a country wey get plenty rivers and natural water sources.
For many communities, people dey wake up by 4am just to queue for water truck. Some dey trek kilometers to fetch water from streams wey no even clean. Others dey depend on expensive pure water sachets for their daily needs. This no be life at all!
The situation don create serious health problems too. Waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea dey kill people, especially children, because of poor water quality. Many families dey spend huge percentage of their income just to buy water instead of using that money for other important things like education and healthcare.
For the people of Ubakala and Ariaria areas, this water projects na answered prayer. Imagine say instead of buying water every day or trekking long distances to fetch am, you fit just open your tap and get clean water. E go save money, time, and plenty wahala.
Business owners for these areas go also benefit big time. Restaurants, hotels, and other businesses wey need constant water supply go finally operate without stress. This fit even attract more investments to these communities as infrastructure improve.
Health-wise, access to clean water go reduce the burden of waterborne diseases for families. Children wey suppose dey go school instead of fetching water go finally get that opportunity. Women wey dey bear the brunt of water collection go get time to focus on other productive activities.
This N1.3 billion investment na more than just water projects – e be statement of intent from Governor Otti's administration. E show say government dey serious about providing basic amenities wey Nigerians deserve.
But make we no forget say water infrastructure na long-term investment. These projects need proper maintenance and management to ensure say dem go serve the people for many years. The government must put systems in place to prevent the kind of abandonment wey we don see with other public projects.
Other state governors need to dey watch wetin Abia State dey do. Instead of focusing only on roads and buildings, investing in water infrastructure na fundamental need wey go improve the quality of life for citizens immediately.
Water na basic human right, not privilege. Every Nigerian deserves access to clean, affordable water without stress. When government prioritize this kind of project, e show say dem understand the real needs of the people.
As we dey celebrate this development for Abia State, make we also remember say there are still many communities across Nigeria wey no get access to clean water. The fight must continue until every Nigerian fit turn tap and see clean water flow.
For Governor Otti and his team, the real test go be how well these projects dey maintain and how effectively dem go serve the people. Make the water flow regularly, make the quality dey good, and make the cost dey affordable for common man.
This N1.3 billion investment na good start, but e must translate to real improvement in people's daily lives. That na the only way we go know say the money well spent.
Water don finally reach Abia, and we dey hope say other states go follow this good example. After all, clean water na basic need, not luxury!
