My people, e be like say wahala don set for Nigeria o! The American House Committee on Appropriations don threaten to slash our aid and developmental assistance by 50 percent. This na serious matter wey fit affect every single Nigerian, from Lagos to Maiduguri.
The US House Committee on Appropriations, na the people wey dey control America's purse strings, don recommend say they go cut Nigeria's aid by half. This decision no just drop from heaven - e get reasons behind am, and most of these reasons dey point to our security wahala.
For context, America don dey support Nigeria with plenty money over the years. We dey talk about millions of dollars wey dey come in form of security assistance, humanitarian aid, and development programs. This money dey help us fight Boko Haram, tackle banditry, and provide support for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Before we start crying, make we look at wetin this American money don dey do for us:
Now imagine say half of this support just disappear overnight. E no go funny at all.
Chai! If this aid cut happen, our security challenges fit multiply like locust. Right now, our military and police dey already struggle with inadequate funding and equipment. Remove American support, and e be like say you dey remove one leg from three-legged chair.
For the Northeast, where Boko Haram and ISWAP still dey cause havala, this cut go mean less training for our soldiers, less intelligence sharing, and less equipment to fight these terrorists. The result? More attacks on innocent civilians.
For the North Central and Northwest, where bandits don turn farming communities to ghost towns, reduced American support go mean less resources to tackle these criminals. Farmers wey don already abandon their lands fit no get hope of returning soon.
Make no mistake, na ordinary Nigerians go feel this cut pass. When security dey weak, everybody dey suffer. Farmers no fit go farm, traders no fit travel freely, and children no fit go school without fear.
The humanitarian aspect na another serious matter. Currently, America dey support feeding programs for over 2 million IDPs across Nigeria. Cut this support by half, and you go see serious hunger and malnutrition for the camps.
Market women for places like Maiduguri, Yola, and Damaturu wey don just start to dey trade again after years of Boko Haram wahala, this aid cut fit send them back to square one.
Truth be told, America no just wake up one morning decide to cut our money. Our security situation don dey frustrate them too. Despite all the money and support wey they don give us, insecurity still dey increase.
The Kaduna train attack, the Owo church massacre, the daily kidnapping for Abuja-Kaduna highway, and the fact say bandits still dey collect tax from farmers - all these things dey show say the money no dey produce the expected results.
Some American lawmakers don dey question whether Nigeria get the political will to tackle insecurity. They dey wonder if their taxpayers' money dey go to the right place.
If we want to prevent this aid cut or minimize its impact, Nigeria government need to show serious commitment to tackling insecurity. This mean:
This threatened aid cut na wake-up call for Nigeria. We cannot continue to depend on foreign support while our own commitment to security dey questionable. The time don reach for us to take full ownership of our security challenges.
President Bola Tinubu and his team need to engage with American authorities immediately. They should present a clear roadmap for improving security and show concrete steps wey the government don already take.
At the same time, we need to diversify our security partnerships. Countries like China, France, and the UK fit provide alternative support if America reduce their involvement.
For ordinary Nigerians, this na time to support community policing initiatives and provide intelligence to security agencies. We cannot leave everything to government alone.
The bottom line be say this American aid cut go affect every Nigerian in one way or another. Instead of just complaining, make we use this as motivation to fix our wahala ourselves. After all, na our country be this, and na we go save ourselves.
God help Nigeria!
