My people, una see wetin dey happen for Ghana side? The country don enter serious wahala as onion and tomato shortage don rock their market like earthquake. But before we dey laugh dem, make we pause small and ask ourselves: Wetin we for do if same thing happen for Nigeria?
This Ghana matter no be small something oh. Nigerian onion suppliers don suspend their exports to Ghana after serious disagreement with Ghanaian traders. The matter so serious that ordinary tomato and onion - ingredients wey dey every African kitchen - don become like gold for their market.
The whole drama start when Ghanaian traders and Nigerian suppliers no fit agree on pricing and trade terms. You know say Nigeria na major supplier of onions to West Africa, especially from our northern states like Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina. When we talk say we no dey send again, Ghana market don scatter.
But this na more than just onion and tomato matter. E show say even our neighbors wey suppose be our brothers fit turn their back on us when business matter enter. Today na Ghana, tomorrow fit be any other country for the region.
Make we no deceive ourselves - if Ghana wey get smaller population fit experience this kind shortage, wetin we think go happen to Nigeria with our over 200 million people? Our own food security system get plenty holes wey need serious patching.
First thing first, we too dey depend on importation for many things. Yes, we produce onions for north, but we still dey import plenty tomato paste, rice, and other basic food items. If tomorrow, our suppliers decide say dem no want do business with us again, na the same Ghana story we go dey tell.
Secondly, this matter show say regional cooperation for agriculture no dey as strong as we think. ECOWAS don dey talk about trade integration since 1975, but see wetin small disagreement fit cause. If we no fit trust our neighbors for food supply, how we go build strong regional economy?
Let me yarn una the truth - Nigeria food security situation no too different from Ghana own. We get the land, we get the people, but our agricultural system still dey struggle with plenty problems:
All these problems dey make us vulnerable to the same kind crisis wey Ghana dey face now. We need to wake up before our own kettle start to whistle.
This Ghana situation na clear warning signal for Nigeria. We need to strengthen our food production capacity, improve storage systems, and reduce our dependence on imports and even exports from our neighbors.
The government need to take agriculture more seriously. We get Anchor Borrowers Programme, but na small farmers dey benefit mostly. We need bigger investment in commercial farming, food processing industries, and agricultural research.
Also, we must improve our regional diplomatic relations. Business no be war, and disagreements should no translate to food scarcity for innocent citizens. We need better conflict resolution mechanisms for trade disputes.
As we dey watch Ghana situation, make we use am as mirror to check ourselves. Our agricultural sector need urgent attention before we find ourselves for similar predicament. Investment in irrigation systems, rural infrastructure, and agricultural education go help us build more resilient food system.
We also need to diversify our agricultural partnerships beyond West Africa. Countries like South Africa, Egypt, and even outside Africa fit become reliable trading partners for food security.
Finally, make we support our local farmers more. Instead of always rushing to buy imported rice and tomato paste, let us patronize local products. Na so we go build strong domestic food system wey no go depend too much on external supply.
The Ghana onion and tomato crisis na wake-up call for all of us for West Africa. If we no learn from their experience and prepare ourselves well, we might find ourselves for even worse situation tomorrow. Make we no wait until hunger start to bite before we take action.
