My people, as the rains dey come heavy this season, our farmers need to wise up sharp-sharp! No be to just plant anyhow and hope for the best. The weather don change, and we must change with am.
I know say when rain start to fall, the first thing wey enter your mind na to rush go plant. But wait small! Climate experts dey warn say this heavy rain fit destroy your crops if you no plan well. One farmer from Kaduna, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, tell me say him nearly lose everything last year because him rush plant when the rain just start.
"I plant my maize immediately the rain start in May. By June, everywhere don flood, my crops die finish. I lose over N500,000," Abubakar confess. This year, him dey do things differently.
Make I share some tips wey successful farmers dey use to beat this heavy rain wahala:
Let me tell you about Mr. Chinedu Okafor from Anambra State. This man been dey farm for 15 years, but him only start to make serious money when him embrace climate-smart farming three years ago.
"Before, I dey lose at least 40% of my crops every rainy season. Now, I hardly lose 5%. The secret na proper planning and good drainage," Okafor explain. Him now dey make over N2 million every farming season from just 2 hectares of land.
Another inspiring story na that of Mrs. Fatima Ibrahim from Niger State. She dey grow rice, and since she start to use improved seeds and better water management, her yield don increase by 60%. "The rain wey suppose destroy my crops now dey help me get more harvest," she talk with pride.
If you be farmer and you wan survive this rainy season, here na wetin you suppose do immediately:
You fit think say all these preparation go cost you plenty money, but the truth be say e go save you money for long run. According to agricultural economists, farmers wey adopt climate-smart practices dey spend about 20% more on preparation, but them dey get 50-70% better yields.
Take Mr. James Okoro from Cross River State as example. Him spend extra N50,000 on drainage and improved seeds this year, but him harvest worth N800,000 instead of the usual N300,000 him dey get before.
The good news be say government dey try to support farmers. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Anchor Borrowers' Programme dey provide loans and improved seeds for farmers. Also, some state governments like Lagos, Kebbi, and Ogun dey give subsidy for agricultural inputs.
Make you check with your local agricultural development programme (ADP) office to see wetin dey available for your area. Sometimes, the support dey there but farmers no dey know about am.
My fellow Nigerians, farming na business, and every successful business person know say planning na key. This heavy rain season, make we no allow weather defeat us. With proper preparation, the same rain wey fit destroy crops go become blessing wey go increase your harvest.
Remember, no be to fight nature – na to work with am smartly. Start to prepare now before the heavy rains start in earnest. Your pocket and your family go thank you later!
